Suitability assessment – Task-related factors

Many factors need to be considered when selecting a suitable respiratory protective device (RPD) for a particular situation.  As part of the RPD suitability assessment, task related factors should be considered such as (but may not be limited to):

  • Is the task being carried out in a confined space? (Step 7.1)
  • Is the duration of the RPD continuous wear >1 hour before it is taken off? (Step 7.2)
  • Is the contaminant an eye irritant? (Step 7.3)
  • Does the task require mobility? (Step 7.4)
  • Is precise communication needed to give safety and or task critical instructions when RPD is worn? (Step 7.5)
  • Does the task create sparks, molten metal or UV radiation? (Step 7.6)
  • Is the work area potentially explosive or flammable? (Step 7.7)
  • Is the work area atmosphere corrosive? (Step 7.8)
