Contaminant & CAS Number

Contaminant/Chemical name
The chemical name may be a systematic name, the common name or a generic name. Often a chemical has multiple names, these other names are referred to as ‘synonyms’.

CAS Number
A Chemical Abstract Service Registry Number (CAS Number) is assigned to a single chemical by the Chemical Abstract Service in the United States. The CAS number serves as a unique identifier of the chemical. Some mixtures are also assigned a CAS Number. These act like a “chemical ID card” for substances like caffeine (58-08-2). These numbers are crucial for identifying substances on Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and in databases, linking all information about a compound regardless of its name or synonyms.
